This position requires a hands-on technical and experienced sales and use tax leader with the desire to operate in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. A demonstrated ability to manage staff, multiple projects and ad hoc requests, articulate sales and use tax concepts to both non tax business customers and to sales and use tax experts, and negotiate on behalf of ACS to minimize tax exposure or maximize tax opportunities is essential. Position reports to the Treasurer and SVP of Tax.

Representative duties and responsibilities

Lead the sales and use tax function for the ACS enterprise, including research, planning, compliance, audits, due diligence efforts, use tax accruals, policy and procedure determination, and department improvement efforts, including the following:

  • Train and mentor tax managers and lower level staff.
  • Conduct regular reviews of business unit operations to ascertain risks, implement risk mitigation plans, document business processes, and find tax savings opportunities
  • Work closely with top management on issues related to tax compliance, tax regulations, or tax planning initiatives. Identify and recommend opportunities to minimize tax liabilities
  • Perform complex research and generate documentation to support audit and filing positions
  • Review and advise on the sales tax aspects of contracts for both risk analysis and tax minimization
  • Ensure that sales and use tax compliance is performed in a timely, efficient, and accurate manner
  • Make appropriate recommendations and implement as necessary registration and withdrawal from states, completion of tax filings, and institution of proper billing and payment procedures
  • Maintain lines of communication with business units to ascertain changes in business locations or product offerings
  • Oversee the use of tax accrual systems to ensure that tax is being properly charged or accrued. Work with vendors and business units to ensure systems are functioning as needed
  • Stay current on sales tax laws and monitor and/or quantify potential changes that could have a material impact to ACS. Document findings and recommendations effectively
  • Manage due diligence projects on acquisition candidates, and implement transition on completed transactions
  • Review and submit information for tax audits or other external requests. Negotiate tax audits and communicate status/risk with recommendations for appeals or settlement
  • Work with outside advisors as needed regarding issues, projects or protests
  • Direct and oversee the development, modification, review, and implementation of tax systems, tax compliance reporting methods and controls, policies and procedures
  • Manage additional projects as assigned and the projects assigned to lower level staff or managers



    Preferred Skills

  • BS/BA degree or equivalent. Master’s degree is a plus.
  • 8+ years of relevant, progressive experience in sales tax for large corporations
  • Possess a depth of hands-on experience with the taxability of services including determining the location of service revenue for sales tax purposes
  • Comprehensive knowledge of sales and use tax policy, practices and procedures
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated management experience
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to use PC, calculator, and/or other office equipment
  • Proficiency using PC software, including word processing and spreadsheets
  • Strong emphasis on effective and efficient project management
